Preparing for IELTS: Seven Things That Move Your Band Score
From Writing Task 2 to Speaking — everything you need to know to reach the band score you are aiming for, gathered from what our teachers see in class.
1. Put time management first
The most common mistake in IELTS is misjudging how to split your time between sections. Allow 20 minutes per passage in Reading, no more than 20 minutes for Writing Task 1 and 40 for Task 2. Always keep the last 5 minutes for checking.
2. A strategy for Writing Task 2
Plan before you write — spend two or three minutes noting your main ideas and examples. The introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion should all be clearly separated. Link them with transitions (Furthermore, However, In conclusion).
“For a target of band 7, one main idea and one concrete example per paragraph is critical. Specific examples earn marks where general statements do not.”
3. Sounding fluent in Speaking
Avoid filler words (um, you know, like) as far as you can. Use short pauses instead — phrases such as “That's a good question” or “Let me think about that” buy you time while sounding natural.
4. Scan before you listen
Always scan the question paper before the recording starts. Mark the key words and work out what kind of information each gap expects — a date, a name, a number. That preparation makes it far easier to stay focused while listening.
5. Read faster
Use skimming and scanning deliberately. Rather than reading every word, go to the parts of the text the questions point you to. Learn to tell the main idea from the sentences that support it.
6. Vocabulary and variety of expression
Using synonyms earns marks in both Writing and Speaking. Instead of repeating a word, vary it: “crucial”, “significant” or “vital” in place of “important”.
7. Build a mock exam routine
In the two or three months before the exam, sit at least one full mock every week. Use a timer and reproduce real exam conditions. Note your mistakes and focus on not repeating them next time.
