General English

Not just to learn English, but to use it in everyday life.

Free Placement Test

The NYLA General English Programme develops speaking, listening, reading and writing skills together, so that you can use English in everyday life with greater confidence and effectiveness.

Our programme is built on the Communicative Language Teaching approach. You don’t just learn grammar rules; you develop active communication skills by using the English you learn in real-life scenarios.

The programme follows a spiral learning system. This means you revisit topics you have already covered at different levels and in different contexts, reinforcing your knowledge and applying what you have learnt to increasingly complex language structures.

What Skills Will You Gain on the General English Programme?

  • Speaking

You practise speaking by using English in real-life scenarios and learn to express yourself more fluently and confidently.

  • Listening

You develop your listening skills through different accents, speaking speeds and examples of everyday communication.

  • Reading

You build your vocabulary through a variety of texts and materials while learning to understand what you read more quickly and accurately.

  • Writing

You develop your ability to write in English across different formats, such as emails, messages and everyday texts.

  • Grammar and Vocabulary

You learn the core structures of English systematically and build a vocabulary you can use in both everyday and professional communication.

How Does the General English Course Work?

  1. Placement Test

Before your course begins, you take a written and oral placement test. This establishes your current level and your needs.

  2. A Programme That Suits You

Based on your level, goals and availability, we put together the right programme for you, with one-to-one lessons or group lessons.

  3. Structured Learning

Throughout the course, you work with Oxford and Cambridge resources alongside supporting materials prepared by NYLA.

  4. Using English Actively

Lessons go beyond explaining topics: you practise English actively through speaking, listening, discussion, role-play and real-life scenarios.

  5. Regular Monitoring

Your progress is monitored regularly through homework, classwork and assessments.

  6. End-of-Level Assessment

At the end of each course level, an assessment measures your progress, and when you pass, you receive your NYLA certificate.

Why Study General English at NYLA?

  • Oxford & Cambridge Resources

We use Oxford University Press materials as our main coursebooks, and Cambridge resources for grammar and additional practice.

  • Expert Teaching Staff

We work with experienced subject specialists and offer the opportunity to study with native-speaker teachers at B2, C1 and C2 levels.

  • Continuity with the Same Teacher

Wherever possible, you stay with the same teacher throughout a course level, so that you build a good rapport and your learning continues without interruption.

  • Lesson Times That Fit Your Schedule

We plan lesson days and times around your availability and schedule, so that your course fits into your daily life and working routine.

  • Bringing English into Everyday Life

Learning doesn’t stop when the lesson ends. To help you make English part of your daily life, we recommend websites, magazines, newspapers, YouTube and Spotify content, films and TV series.

And every Friday, our Happy Friday content brings English together with music and fun.

The NYLA Approach to General English

  • Communicative Language Teaching

At NYLA, we see English not simply as “a subject to be learnt” but as a communication tool to be used actively.

That is why our lessons focus on helping you use the structures you learn in real communicative situations.

  • Grammar → Practice → Communication

Grammar is learnt, practised and then used in communication.

Our aim is not just for you to know English, but to be able to speak and use it.

Assessment & Evaluation

At NYLA, your progress is tracked through classwork, homework, speaking activities and end-of-level assessments.

Assessments based on the Oxford testing system identify your strengths and the areas where you need to improve.

When you successfully complete your course level, you earn a NYLA certificate.
